In preparing this list, we reviewed the program offerings of over 200 schools in the US that offer fashion related programs. Our goal with this list is to give students who are interested in fashion merchandising a starting point by which they can identify the schools that offer fashion merchandising specific programs. The criteria we used in making this list consists of the following, in no particular order: academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program and faculty, and geographic location. The Fashion Design and Merchandising program at West Virginia University focuses on providing students with a broad-based education in fashion design and merchandising. Students leave the program prepared for careers in areas such as apparel design, social-psychology of dress, textile design, historic costume and textiles, and business. Students choose between the Fashion Design Track and the Merchandising Track.

The Fashion Design program at Pierpont Community & Technical College prepares students for careers in design, marketing and sales, or visual merchandising in various design businesses and retailers. Students have the opportunity to put classroom theory and knowledge to use in a practicum at a local retail store, where they gain on-the-job experience in sales and marketing. Internships and student-run fashion shows provide further opportunities to gain professional experience.
