Florida

Florida, Sunshine State, 'land of flowers.' Each new wave of immigrants from the 1500s to the present has carried to Florida a dream of a new life in paradise. In the 20th century alone, Florida has grown from the South's most sparsely populated state to its largest. Since the 1930's, at least sixty different ethnic groups, apart from Anglo-Americans and African-Americans, have come to call Florida home, and they have created the most diverse state in the U.S. today.

Florida

Many Florida fashion schools rank high among the best schools in the nation. To land a spot on any given “Best Schools” list, these respected institutions have been evaluated by large organizations such as Forbes, Princeton Review, and U.S. News & World Report. These organizations assess factors such as number of program offerings, graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources (student-teacher ratio), financial resources, and student selectivity when determining which schools will make the list.

Florida

Florida is home to one of the top U.S. cities for fashion—Miami. No other city has a greater influence in the swimwear industry and “The Magic City” is even listed at number 13 on the list of Fashion Capitals of the World. Miami also hosts Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim as well as its own festive Fashion week, which highlights the best emerging and established designers from Australia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and more.

Florida

To determine which fashion schools are among the best, college ranking agencies may evaluate factors such as the number of program offerings, faculty resources, graduation and retention rates, financial resources, student selectivity, and peer assessment. Some factors have more influence than others (a fashion program with small class sizes may fetch a higher score than one with larger classes), which helps determine the final score, and exactly where a school will land on the list.

Each day we receive emails from aspiring fashion designers asking us for advice as to which fashion design schools are the “best” in the US, a given state, or in a particular area of the country.  As such advice is difficult to provide on an individual basis, we have instead created this list of the Top 15 Fashion School Programs in the South. For the record, we define the South as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas.

The Miami Fashion Scene

Miami is the second largest city in Florida and it’s one of the fashion capitals of the world.

At number 13 on the list of Fashion Capitals of the World, Miami earned a spot on the list based largely on the city’s dominance in the swimwear industry. Besides being a fashion capital, Miami Beach was home to the late Gianni Versace—one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. Miami is now the new home of Project Runway Latin America and the famous Miami Fashion Week (MFW).
