From 1959 to 1972 an independent record company located in Detroit, called Motown Records, began creating and marketing hit records better and in larger volume than any record company in the world. From Marvin Gaye to the Jackson 5, Motown represented some of the most popular and influential musical acts to hit the national scene. In more recent times, Detroit musicians like Eminem and Kid Rock have gained fame and notoriety, all the while being embraced by the nation’s youth. Their steadfast refusal to desert their home city speaks to the depth of roots locals put down in the Motor City.
