Iowa State’s apparel, merchandising, and design program consolidates several aspects of
fashion design and related fields in order to give students a comprehensive understanding
of the industry. Students are required to take breadth courses in dress and diversity, textiles,
computer applications, aesthetics, merchandising, manufacturing, global issues, and internship.
Fashion majors can participate in a number of field study programs in NY, LA, Chicago, or
Mexico. Design majors have the opportunity to combine the fashion program’s integrative core
curriculum with a concentrated area of study.

internships must be taken on a graded basis and are supervised by faculty. Usually, interns are
placed at major national retail chains. Students in the textiles and clothing program have the
opportunity to enrich their learning through the department’s partnership with international
institutions at London College of Fashion, Paris American Academy, Accademia Italiana in
Florence, Italy, and Lorenzo de Medici in Florence. Majors can enroll in either sumer-long or
semester-long study abroad programs, with a field trip option to Mexico.
